About Van Cleef Arpels Vintage Alhambra 18k Yellow Gold Necklace Mother of Pearl

The Vintage Alhambra pendant is the piece the entire collection is built around — a single four-leaf motif in white mother-of-pearl, framed by the beaded 18K yellow gold border that Van Cleef & Arpels has been setting by hand since 1968. It hangs from a fine trace chain that sits right at the base of the throat.

Mother-of-pearl is the material that makes this work. The face isn't flat white — move it and you catch pale pink, then silver, then a warm cream, depending entirely on the light and the angle. Every shell is cut differently, so every motif reads differently. That variation is the point, not a flaw.

The beaded border is where the craft shows. Individual gold beads, hand-applied around the perimeter, holding the stone with four small prongs at the notches between the lobes.

Wears alone against a bare neck. Layers with a Sweet Alhambra or a longer motif chain without crowding. The single most recognizable pendant in modern fine jewelry, and one of the very few that genuinely goes with everything.

Van Cleef and Arpels Backstory

Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 by Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels brothers — Charles, Julien, and Louis — sons of jeweler Salomon Arpels. The maison's Place Vendôme address remains its headquarters more than a century later.

In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented the Mystery Set, an invisible setting technique in which precious stones are mounted with no visible prongs or metalwork between them. The technique requires hundreds of hours per piece and is still used today on the maison's most important high jewelry.

Across collections like Alhambra, Perlée, and Frivole, Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century French jewelry.
